Popular Great Barrier Reef Islands

Island Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system. Covering all of nearly 344,400 square kms, it can be seen from Outer Space! There are over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching across 3000 kms.

The islands of the Great Barrier Reef are a popular destination for tourists, especially around Whitsundays and Cairns regions. The reefs around the islands support a wide diversity of life attracting tourists to this World Heritage Site.

The islands along the length of coastline can be accessed from the mainland towns of Port Douglas to Bundaberg. They allow tourists to hop between the pristine, palm-fringed islands to explore the rainbow-colored coral islands and marine life below.

Long sunny days offer island holiday destinations all year round. Even the tropical wet season typically lasting from November to March has a charm all its own.

The Reef islands offer great escapes into a living natural undersea habitat where you can swim, snorkel, dive and sail. Whitsunday, Daintree, Hamilton, Hayman, Lizard, Dunk, Heron and Fitzroy – all these islands offer great water activities.
